The entire game revolves around him. Victory is not the destruction of the other, but the protection and alignment of the King. Spiritually, this mirrors the final stage of the journey: consciousness stabilized. When the King is in check, the psyche is fragmented; when he is safe, the world reorganizes itself around him.
